I've written about Gallo Family Vineyard Twin Valley wines
before, including the Gallo Twin Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Gallo Twin Valley Hearty Burgundy. Like both of the previous Gallo Twin Valley wines, the Sauvignon Blanc is a non-vintage wine from California. These are table wines, meant to be affordable, readily available, and perfect for buying spontaneously to accompany dinner.
Gallo's Twin Valley Sauvignon Blanc is a traditional crisp, citrus-pear-melon Sauvignon Blanc. It's floral in aroma, with very definite pear and melon notes. In the glass, the wine is a very pale straw yellow. There's no question that this is a Sauvignon Blanc; the expected notes of pear, a hint of lemon and a melon finish, are all there. It's definitely a wine that's on the sweet side of Sauvignon Blanc, but light enough that it those who don't like sweet wines might not object if it's paired carefully. We had it with a slightly spicy Asian brown rice stir-fry, with beef. I know, I see your raised eye-brow at the mention of the beef, but the sweet chili and the crisp stir-fried vegetables were a marvelous match. That said, this wine would be lovely on a deck with a plate of crackers and a trio of soft goat cheeses.
There's a notice on the top page of the Gallo Family Vineyards Website, home of their Twin Valley's table wine line, that says "Look for our updated package in stores now, and a fully updated Website coming soon." I have no idea what that means, but I suspect it involves new package art.
